One critical way to stay safe this holiday season

Updated: Jan 21, 2019

The holiday season is a beautiful and spirited time of year, yet a major fire hazard is encompassed in decorating our homes. The Christmas tree, when not sufficiently watered, can become one of the most dangerous objects during the holidays.

Fires involving Christmas trees are much deadlier than many other types of house fires, and several people die each year as a result of Christmas tree fires. In this video created by the National Fire Protection Association, it is clear that an unwatered Christmas tree (left) burns much more quickly than a tree that is watered daily (right).

Even a tree without water for two weeks can ignite and spread fire quickly.

The video below from the Suffolk County Fire Marshal's Office displays that even a tree without water for two weeks can ignite and spread quickly. Boo Boo Bears encourages you to pursue fire prevention and spread fire safety awareness by:

  • watering your Christmas tree every day

  • placing flammable objects like your Christmas tree at least 3 feet away from heat sources

  • only using UL approved lights & never using candles to decorate near your tree

  • sharing this blog post!
